Friends of the Jacksonville Public Library donating record $260,000
It’s good to have friends — especially when they’re giving you $260,000.
Friends of the Jacksonville Public Library donated that amount to the city’s library system Friday. The group’s annual donations come almost entirely from book sales.
Harry Reagan, its president, said this year’s amount is a record for the group, which was organized in 1955.
The group holds several book sales throughout the year as well as running the BOOKtique bookstore in the Main Library.
Last year, the group had one sale at the Jacksonville Fairgrounds and three at its book warehouse at the University Park
Branch Library. It also sells books each Saturday at the University Park Branch Library from 9 a.m. to noon.
“We really treasure the Friends of the Jacksonville Public Library not only for their financial support, but also for the role
that they play in making the public aware of the library’s presence in Jacksonville,” said Jim Selzer, chairman of Jacksonville Public Library board.
The funds go toward items on the library system’s “wish list” throughout the year, which can include anything from acquisitions of new material and expansions of its facilities.
In 2011, the library system hosted nearly five million visitors.
About three million items, including books, CDs and movies, circulate throughout the system, Library Director Barbara Gubbin said.

The JPL/JEA Home Energy Evaluation Kits won the Innovation award – this was a joint project begun by Luis Flores following on his efforts to make JPL a more “green” organization and his work in collaboration with JEA and their efforts to help homeowners evaluate their home for energy use. Luis brought in Robbie Tiedeman and Kathy Lussier with a number of other staff involved including Ron Block and the CRU plus everyone at a circulation desk who has checked the kits out. To date, the JEA backpacks have been checked out more than 717 times.
The awards will be presented at the NEFLIN Annual Meeting on September 16 at the Thrasher Horne Conference Center in Orange Park.
Three Cheers: |
There is no better friend than a friend of books. Perhaps it's because book readers have a broader world view. Whatever the reason, Jacksonville has been blessed to have had a strong Friends of the Library group for 55 years. What else in this town is still going strong after 55 years? Established on June 14, 1955, by the American Association of University Women, this group was instrumental in moving from the Carnegie library to the Haydon Burns Library, reported Friends President Harry Reagan in a news release.

Ricardo Montoya Honored as Volunteer of the Year!Ricardo Montoya was chosen FJPL's Volunteer of the Year for 2010. In announcing the board's decision, FJPL President Harry Reagan called Ricardo "an invaluable volunteer." Selecting our top volunteer is an annual tradition and a very difficult task for the FJPL Board. "Ricardo has worked consistently and tirelessly at our sorting center, at Great Jacksonville Book Sales at the Fairgrounds, at our mini-sales and at the BOOKtique," Reagan said. "He pitches in wherever, whenever he is needed." Ricardo came to the Fairgrounds as a customer, decided to volunteer and he has been volunteering ever since. |
FJPL has started a new program, We need donations to pay the costs of shipping books, tapes, etc. We also need your help to connect with men and women from the First Coast who are serving overseas. Thanks, |

Books you don't need? Books you need to get rid of?Bring them to Friends of the Jacksonville Public Library so they can be sold to raise money for our public libraries. Drop them off at any of Jacksonville's 21 libraries or bring them directly to FJPL at University Park Library, 3435 University Blvd. N. any Saturday morning. FJPL volunteers are there every Saturday morning to sort books. You can also shop for bargains on fiction at the Saturday Morning Bookstore.
