No. 4.
Old Spanish Gate at San Augustine, Florida.
The exact date of their construction has been lost with the records; however we have good reason for supposing that they were built about 1705. The English Governor Moore of the English colonies to the north with Colonel Daniels burnt the town in 1702, and as the next attack from the land was unsuccessful due to the city being walled, it is assumed that the Spanish fortified themselves in this manner after its destruction that year.
The first mention of the gates in history is given in connection with the invasion of Colonel Palmer of South Carolina who laid waste to the whole country in 1727 and pushed forward "To the gates of San Augustine." History further states he failed to effect an entrance into the town. (M.L. Hunt, Dallas, Texas. April 18, 1926)
