St. John's Bluff. It was upon this hill, either that portion of its shown in this picture, or the part which has been washed away just to the right, where the St. John's river now flows, that was built Ft. Caroline by the French under Ribault and Laudonniere.

There is some uncertainty as to the location of the exact spot w here the fort was built. It is generally thought that the river just to the right of this picture has washed away the part of the hill on which the fort was located; however, the part shown must necessarily have been closely associated with these early activities, and should be accepted as part of the original location.

The fort was destroyed by the Spaniards under Menendez in 1565 (photo by M.L. Hunt, Dallas, Texas April. 8, 1926)
