We the People

The We the People initiative is a joint effort by the National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH) and the American Library Association (ALA) Public Programs Office to encourage young people to read and understand classic books in the K-12 reading levels while exploring themes in American history, culture and ideas.

Public and school (K-12) libraries were invited to apply to be among the 2,000 libraries selected to receive each We the People Bookshelf, fifteen thematically related books along with supplementary materials, including bookplates, bookmarks, and posters, which embody the established theme for that school year.

Congratulations to five Jacksonville Public Library branches for being part of the 2,000 libraries receiving the 2006 We The People Bookshelf! (Becoming American). Additionally, several locations have been awarded the 2006-07 Bookshelf, Pursuit of Happiness. Earlier bookshelves are listed for your convenience.
