Jax Reads is an exciting program designed to have everyone in the community read the same book at the same time and participate in discussions with family, friends and neighbors. Branch libraries, local bookstores, community centers and various other sites are the venues for book discussions and other events.

Jax Reads kicks off our fifth year by encouraging the entire Jacksonville community to read Their Eyes Were Watching God, by Zora Neale Hurston. In previous years we've read Harper Lee's To Kill a Mockingbird, Ray Bradbury's Fahrenheit 451, Sandra Cisneros' The House on Mango Street, and Yann Martel's Life of Pi.

This year Jax Reads is collaborating with The Big Read, an initiative of the National Endowment for the Arts in partnership with the Institute of Museum and Library Services and Arts Midwest. Through a generous grant from the NEA and matching funds from local partners, Jacksonville, along with hundreds of other communities throughout the United States, is helping to restore reading to the center of American culture.
